Sea Grant Helps Communities Learn from Sandy
12 noon – Gateway to NOAA

Hurricane Sandy hit communities hard, and many of the 53 deaths in New York caused by the storm were due to residents not heeding evacuation orders. The Coastal Storm Awareness Program was created by New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut Sea Grant programs to improve the quality of information available on the risk to human safety presented by coastal storms and to better understand the factors coastal residents use in deciding whether and when to heed these warnings and take action to preserve their safety.

Join Dr. Nikola Garber, Deputy Director of Sea Grant, as she discusses what researchers are learning and applying through the ten social science research projects funded through this program.

Thursday, February 11
